It is 15 years ago today that I received my exam results telling me I was now a massage therapist. After months of study and practicing on friends and colleagues it was official! I remember that feeling of relief and excitement that something I really wanted to do, felt drawn and called to do, would actually begin to happen. I was amazed and delighted with my marks too- 92% for the theory and 86% for the practical.
This past month has been a time to look back over these years and think about various clients I've met, courses taken, clinics worked in and so much more. Over time how I work has changed, not just because I've learned new techniques but also because I've learned about myself and my clients. How I feel about assessment, consultation, care and touch has developed. So what are the key things I've learned?
- Your body will tell me much more than you actually do in words
Sometimes clients arrive telling me they are fine, no aches and pains this month, no stress or tension, all is well. Those who have been coming in for a long time usually add, "but I know you'll find something". And I usually do. It might be that their skin is more dry than usual because they've been busy and not drinking enough. It could be that they immediately fall asleep because they had a disturbed night with the person they care for. I might find a spot you didn't notice that needs a bit of help to relax and release because you've been struggling to lift and move equipment.
2. Techniques aren't the most important thing
While I believe it is very important for massage therapists to be well trained and knowledgeable and to keep on learning throughout their career, I realise it isn't the most important thing. It is much more important to me that you feel safe and cared for and listened to when you come to an appointment with me. But I will still keep on learning. I want you to return home to those you care for feeling restored, as if you've been cared for yourself.
3. I have the best job in the world
I've been remembering the wonderful, inspiring clients and families I've met as well as the amazing teachers who have helped me grow and develop and the expert colleagues I've worked with. Every day in clinic is a pleasure. So I want to say a huge thank you to all of you who make it so. I have the best clients, colleagues and supporters.
Thank you all so much and I'm looking forward to the next 15 years!
